Indian expat shares H-1B millionaire roadmap: From paying off debt to investing consistently
In an Instagram post, Jagani outlined the steps he said helped him build his finances in America. He described the process as a long-term effort centred on strengthening his financial foundation, understanding the US financial system and making deliberate decisions about both earnings and expenses.
"Becoming a millionaire on an H-1B wasn't about one lucky investment. It was about building a strong financial foundation, controlling spending, paying off debt, taking advantage of tax-advantaged accounts, and consistently investing," Jagani said.

From financial survival to building a stronger foundation
Jagani said his initial objective was simply to establish financial stability after moving to the US. He started by creating a basic budget and setting aside enough money to cover three to six months of expenses as an emergency fund.According to Jagani, getting his routine finances in order was the first step before attempting to build wealth. He then focused on understanding the financial systems he was navigating in the US and worked towards eliminating existing debt.
The approach, he said, gave him a stronger base from which to improve his financial position over time.
Credit, insurance and retirement savings became part of the plan
Jagani said his financial strategy also involved becoming familiar with several aspects of managing money in the US, including building a credit history, understanding health insurance and handling money that he sent home.He said that as his income increased, he deliberately avoided increasing his spending at the same pace.
"I also built my financial foundation in America. I built credit, understood health insurance and managed money sent home. When my salary increased, I avoided lifestyle inflation. I paid off my education loan, captured my 401(k) match, and started investing."
Paying off his education loan was part of the process, while contributing enough to receive his 401(k) employer match helped him put more of his income towards long-term savings and investments, according to his account.
Upskilling and job switches helped raise his income
Jagani said reducing expenses was only one part of his approach to wealth creation. He argued that improving his earning potential had a greater long-term impact than relying only on cost-cutting.He said he focused on developing new skills and making strategic career moves to increase his income. Rather than treating savings as the sole route to greater wealth, he combined controlled spending with efforts to raise his earnings.
"If you're on an H-1B and trying to build wealth in America, focus on both sides: spend intentionally and keep increasing your earning power. That's how long-term wealth is built," Jagani said.

Avoiding lifestyle inflation helped increase investments
As his financial situation improved, Jagani said he continued to live within his means instead of significantly expanding his lifestyle with every salary increase. The money he did not spend could then be directed towards investments, allowing his savings and investment contributions to grow alongside his income.
His account presents wealth-building as a gradual process involving budgeting, debt repayment, career growth and disciplined investing rather than depending on a single financial windfall.
