A 27-year-old woman, who worked as an employee with HDFC Bank in Gurgaon, celebrated Valentine's Day with her husband, Anshul Dhawan. And, the next day she was murdered by him after they left Mahak's parental home in Hansi for Gurugram. The incident happened around 7pm on February 15. Anshul, a chartered accountant and a resident of Hisar's Sector 14, married Mahak barely five months back in an arranged marriage set-up.

The police cracked the case within 18 hours and arrested her husband Anshul as the prime accused. What first appeared to be a case of robbery soon turned out to be a cold-blooded plan by her husband. According to the investigators, Anshul killed his wife over repeated suspicions about her character and then tried to pass it off as a robbery-cum-murder, reports TOI's Sat Singh.

Mahak’s father, Krishna Kathuria, had voiced suspicion against his son-in-law from the beginning. Family members also claimed that Mahak was pregnant at the time of her death.

On Valentine’s Day (February 14), the couple visited Hisar and stayed with family. On the evening of February 15, when the couple left, Anshul called the cops around 11 pm and claimed that unidentified attackers had intercepted their car near Pahsaur village in the Badli area of Jhajjar district, killed his wife, and fled. According to police, Mahak and Anshul often quarrelled over his suspicions about Mahak’s character. The argument reportedly intensified during a car ride, after which he allegedly strangled her and then slit her throat with scissors, allegedly wearing gloves to avoid leaving evidence. Investigators said he later tried to stage the incident to look like a robbery. The accused has been arrested, and further investigation is underway.
