Guru Ravidas Jayanti Significance



Guru Ravidas, also known as Raidas, Rohidas, and Ruhidas, was born in Mandhuadhe, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1377 C.E. His devotional songs and verses left an indelible mark on the Bhakti Movement. According to the Hindu calendar, Guru Ravidas was born on Magha Purnima. As a result birth anniversary is celebrated on Magha Purnima. According to records, there is some disagreement about Ravidas' exact birth date, with some scholars believing that he was born in the year 1399.

Ravidas was a disciple of Sant Kabir and the founder of the Ravidassia religion. Mirabai was his pupil. His birthplace is now known as Shri Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan, and it is a major pilgrimage site for Guru Ravidas' followers. The Sikh scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, contains forty-one of his devotional songs and poems.

On this auspicious occasion, devotees perform rites by taking a holy dip in sacred rivers. It is considered an annual event during which Ravidassias flock to Varanasi in large numbers. Guru Ravidas Jayanti will be observed on February 5, according to Drik Panchang. Purnima Tithi begins on February 4, 2023, at 9:29 p.m. and will end at 11:58 p.m. on February 5, 2023. People also march in a procession with Guru Ravidas' portrait to remember their great Guru and all-time saint.
