Guru Purnima 2025: Significance

Guru Purnima holds great religious significance for Hindus and is also observed by Buddhists with equal reverence. In Hindu tradition, the day commemorates the birth anniversary of Maharishi Veda Vyasa, one of the most revered Gurus in Hindu scriptures and the author of the Mahabharata. For Buddhists, Guru Purnima marks the day when Lord Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon at Sarnath after attaining enlightenment. On this auspicious occasion, followers express their gratitude to Buddha and to all spiritual teachers who guide them on the path of wisdom and enlightenment.

Guru Purnima 2025: Rituals

1. Begin the day by waking up early and seeking blessings from your parents and elder siblings by touching their feet.
2. After bathing, offer prayers to Lord Surya (the Sun God).
3. Pay homage to Lord Ganesha, the deity of wisdom and knowledge.
4. If you have a spiritual Guru, visit them to express your gratitude and seek their blessings by respectfully touching their feet.
5. On this sacred day of Guru Purnima, offer clothes, shoes, fruits, and dakshina to Brahmins and Gurus. You can also share sweets with your parents as a gesture of love and respect.
6. Recite the Guru Mantra to honor and remember the guidance of your Gurus.
