Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025: Date, history, significance and celebrations

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab or Guru Parv, is one of the most revered festivals in Sikhism, commemorating the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith. His teachings of compassion, truth, and unity continue to guide followers across the world. The day is celebrated with illuminated gurudwaras, devotional hymns, processions, and community service through langar (free meals).

Date and significance of Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti will be observed on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, marking the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The festival falls on Kartik Purnima, the full moon day in the month of Kartik, and holds deep religious importance in both Sikh and Hindu traditions.

Life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 CE in Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib in present-day Pakistan, to Mehta Kalu Chand and Mata Tripta Devi. From a young age, he questioned social hierarchies and rituals, preaching equality, selfless service, and devotion to one God. His message of universal brotherhood transcended religion and remains timeless.


Among his most profound teachings is: “Ek Onkar Satnam, Karta Purakh, Nirbhau, Nirvair,” meaning “There is one God. His name is Truth. He is the Creator, Fearless and without hatred.”

Celebrations and rituals

Festivities begin two days earlier with the Akhand Path, a continuous 48-hour recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib. On the main day, devotees participate in Prabhat Pheris—early morning processions with hymns—followed by Nagar Kirtans where the Guru Granth Sahib is carried in a decorated palki. Traditional martial art performances such as Gatka are also showcased.

Gurudwaras are decorated with flowers and lights, while langars serve free meals to all, reflecting Guru Nanak’s ideals of equality and service. The celebrations culminate with evening prayers, kirtans, and candlelight devotion, uniting communities in faith and reflection.
