Guru Nanak Jayanti (Gurpurab) History: Why Gurpurab is celebrated

Gurpurab celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru. Born in 1469, he laid the foundation of Sikhism and spread the message of one God, truth, equality, and service to humanity. His teachings encouraged people to live with honesty, kindness, and humility.

Gurudwaras begin preparations two days in advance with Akhand Path, a non-stop 48-hour recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhs.

Guru Nanak Jayanti: Significance and Rituals

Gurpurab is not just a celebration but a reminder of Guru Nanak’s guiding principles — to treat everyone equally and live a life of truthful conduct.

On the eve of Gurpurab, devotees participate in Nagarkirtan, a procession led by the Panj Pyaras (Five Beloved Ones). Hymns are sung, teachings are shared, and the spirit of community shines through.

On the main day, Prabhat Pheris — morning prayer processions — start early, followed by kirtan, kathas, and langar, a community meal open to all. The practice reflects Guru Nanak’s belief in equality and service.

“Truth is high, but higher still is truthful living.”
