Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024: Check the states that have declared school holidays for Gurupurab

Guru Nanak Jayanti, or Gurupurab, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. It’s a day to remember his teachings of equality, kindness, and truth. Sikhs gather at gurdwaras for prayers, singing, and reflecting on his wisdom. In the year 2024, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated on 15th November.

The day typically starts with Prabhat Pheris, where people sing special prayers together. A special part of the celebration is Langar, where free meals are served to everyone, showing the spirit of sharing. There are also parades, called Nagar Kirtans, with singing and dancing in the streets.



Schools across India will observe a holiday in honour of Guru Nanak Jayanti, marking the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is declared and celebrated as a gazetted holiday. The day provides families an opportunity to attend religious gatherings, prayers, and community services that honor Guru Nanak's teachings.


Schools will remain closed for two days in Punjab, with November 16 dedicated to honouring Kartar Singh Sarabha, a revered freedom fighter and leader in India’s independence struggle. Odisha will also observe a school holiday on November 15 for Rahas Purnima, a traditional festival. This regional holiday celebrates the full moon.
