The IMD has issued an orange Alert for Gurugram, warning that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Gurugram, Faridabad, Jhajjar, Nuh, Palwal, Rewari and Sonipat during the next 24 hours. Residents are advised to follow official advisories, avoid waterlogged stretches and exercise caution while travelling.Overall, the Gurugram weather is expected to remain favourable for monsoon activity in the short term, with Gurgaon rain likely to bring intermittent showers before temperatures rise over the weekend.
Heavy traffic jam leaves commuters frustrated
Gurugram struggled with waterlogging and traffic chaos as it received 115 mm of rain in the 33 hours, with commuters stranded on roads for hours. Traffic crawled on several major roads, including the Delhi-Jaipur Highway service lane near Narsinghpur, Basai, Kadipur and Sohna Road, with several vehicles reportedly breaking down in waterlogged stretches.Officials said teams from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), police and other agencies were deployed to drain out water and regulate traffic.
"Unimaginable traffic jam on old Gurgaon Delhi road Opp Maruti due to broken roads and bad traffic management. #MCG should have been busy preparing for rains rather than demolition activity causing inconvenience to citizens," a frustrated commuter wrote on X.
Gurugram records 115mm rainfall in just 2 days
Gurugram's drainage infrastructure came under severe strain after the city received 115 mm of rainfall over the past two days. Official figures showed that 83 mm of rain fell on Tuesday, followed by 32 mm on Wednesday, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions.Residents reported several rain-related incidents across the city. In Feroze Gandhi Colony, a cyclist reportedly fell into a pit dug for a sewer line, while a cow was injured after slipping into another open excavation on Wednesday. Elsewhere, a school bus became stranded in a dug-up stretch in Rajendra Park, highlighting the risks posed by ongoing civic works during the monsoon.
The heavy downpour also caused massive traffic snarls, leaving many office-goers stuck on the roads until well after midnight. Several commuters said their journey home took five to six hours because of the gridlock.
Waterlogging was reported from multiple locations, including Sectors 31 and 39, Sheetla Mata Mandir Road, Sector 10A, Pataudi Road, Basai Road, Kadipur, and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk.
To manage the situation, the Gurugram Traffic Police deployed 260 additional personnel, along with five cranes, two Hydra machines, an ambulance, 17 motorcycle patrol units, and six police vehicles to assist commuters and clear congestion.
