Gujarat weather alert: 'Heavy' to 'very heavy' unseasonal rains expected in several regions from May 23 to 25, warns IMD

Several parts of Gujarat are expected to receive heavy unseasonal rains in the coming days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. This weather change is due to a low-pressure area likely to form over the Arabian Sea.

According to AK Das, Head of the Meteorological Centre in Ahmedabad, an upper air cyclonic circulation is currently present over the east-central Arabian Sea, off the coasts of north Karnataka and Goa. This system reaches up to the mid-tropospheric level.

He said, “Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form in the same region within the next 12 hours. It will then move northwards and may intensify into a depression in the next 36 hours.”


Due to this weather system, several parts of Gujarat will experience heavy rains with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds up to 50 kmph on May 23, 24 and 25.

An orange alert has been issued for multiple areas in Gujarat. The IMD warned that “heavy to very heavy rainfall” could happen at isolated places in:

• South Gujarat: Valsad, Navsari
• Saurashtra region: Amreli, Junagadh, Gir Somnath

In addition, light to moderate rain is expected across many districts in Gujarat between May 22 and May 28.

Warning for Fishermen

The IMD has also issued a warning for fishermen, especially in coastal regions of south Gujarat. “They are advised not to go into the sea after May 22,” said Das.

The rains are part of pre-monsoon activity but are happening earlier than expected. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow official warnings.
