Gujarat elections: Chidambaram targets BJP over Morbi bridge tragedy, says no one resigned
Chidambaram who is in Ahmedabad to campaign for the Congress said this was due to the BJP's "arrogance" that it need not be accountable for the collapse of the bridge.
Chidambaram who is in Ahmedabad to campaign for the Congress said this was due to the BJP's "arrogance" that it need not be accountable for the collapse of the newly renovated suspension bridge on the Machchuu river.
“As per my knowledge nobody has apologised or resigned for such a big tragedy. This is due to the BJP's arrogance. If such a thing would have happened in a foreign country, there would have been immediate resignations," PTI quoted him as saying.
He said it was because the BJP government in Gujarat felt it could easily win the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
"In those states where people defeat the government, they feel accountable. I would appeal to the people of Gujarat to change this government and give a chance to the Congress,” he said.
Assembly elections will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5 in Gujarat and votes will be counted on December 8.
Chidambaram, one of the first national leaders from his party to campaign in the state, also claimed that Gujarat was being "run from Delhi" and not by the chief minister of the state.
The former finance minister at a press conference also accused the ruling BJP of misusing central probe agencies like the ED and CBI.
“They are handmaidens of the BJP. Ninety five per cent of the arrests they are making are of politicians of opposition parties," he said.
