PlayStation has launched its biggest console-level promotional campaign for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) as pre-orders officially opened, marking the first time a single game has taken over the PS5 startup experience and PlayStation App branding.

The promotion coincides with Rockstar Games confirming GTA VI's release date, pricing and physical edition plans. At the same time, new reports have suggested that a traditional disc edition could arrive after launch, while Xbox file listings have fuelled speculation about a standalone GTA Online release.

Players began spotting the GTA VI startup animation on June 24, 2026, a day before pre-orders opened on June 25. The custom animation prompts users to pre-order the game before loading the PS5 interface and can be dismissed so it does not appear again.

While PlayStation has previously highlighted major releases on the PlayStation Store tab, this is the first time a title has replaced the PS5 welcome screen with a dedicated startup animation. Sony has also updated the PlayStation App icon with GTA VI's purple and pink colour scheme, extending the game's branding across its ecosystem.

Rockstar confirms release date and editions

Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA VI will launch on November 19, with preloads beginning on November 12.

The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99 and includes additional in-game content. Players who purchase the Standard Edition will also have the option to upgrade later.

Physical copies to launch with download code

Rockstar has confirmed that physical launch copies of GTA VI will include a download code instead of a game disc, ending months of speculation about the retail version.

However, Polish media outlet PPE.pl, citing insider Graczdari, reported that the code-in-a-box version will be limited to the initial production run. According to the report, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X disc editions are expected to launch in December 2026, potentially ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The report also said Rockstar Support informed a customer that current pre-orders are for the digital version only and that a physical copy will be available for purchase in the coming months.

Rockstar has not officially announced a release date for a disc edition.

Xbox listings spark GTA Online speculation

Separate findings from Xbox file listings have generated speculation about GTA VI's online component.

According to social media creator Synth Potato, who credited GlowDevs, the game's story mode appears as a separate downloadable component alongside optional content, including the Vintage Vice City Pack and Ultimate Edition bonuses.

The file structure has led to speculation that Rockstar could release GTA Online separately from the single-player campaign, similar to previous standalone versions of GTA Online. However, the company has not confirmed the existence, pricing or release timeline of a standalone multiplayer version.
