They were developed with the involvement of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). These crackers use a modified chemical composition to reduce emissions. They are designed to achieve at least a 30% reduction in particulate matter emissions and a minimum 10% reduction in gaseous emissions compared with conventional crackers.


They are also designed to produce noise levels below 125 decibels at a distance of four metres from the point of bursting. However, green crackers should not be confused with pollution-free fireworks. Research has found that they can still release ultrafine particles, which may pose health risks.

In Delhi, buyers should look for designated temporary firecracker markets notified by the district administration. The Supreme Court has allowed the temporary sale of approved green crackers, subject to licensing and certification requirements.

Delhi residents can purchase green crackers only from designated sale locations between November 4 and November 6. Areas such as Sadar Bazaar, Chandni Chowk, Shastri Nagar, Sarojini Nagar and New Friends Colony have seen firecracker sales. However, their presence in these markets does not mean every seller is authorised to sell green crackers.

The Delhi Police and district administrations have been directed to monitor sales and prevent the circulation of conventional fireworks. Buyers should check the official district-wise list of authorised sellers before visiting a market.

When can you burst green crackers in Delhi-NCR?

The Supreme Court has allowed residents to burst certified green crackers for only two days this Diwali.
