When an elderly couple rented out their Greater Noida flat last July little did they know they would end up in an ugly situation.

The elderly couple-Sunil Kumar and Rakhi Garg- are spending nights on the stairs of their own apartment as their tenant has refused to vacate the flat. The rent agreement, valid for 11 months, expired on June 10.

The couple arrived in the city from Mumbai on July 19. After reaching Noida Extension, they stayed with their relatives, hoping that their tenant would soon vacate their retirement home located at Shri Radha Sky Garden Society in Sector 16B.

Kumar, who retired from Bharat Petroleum Corporation in March, said that he had been sending text messages to his tenant — identified as Preeti Gupta — since April, reminding her about the rent contract. He said after June 20, Gupta stopped receiving calls and responding to his messages.

Days later, she wrote back claiming that her son was ill, Kumar told TOI.

Kumar said that after arriving in the city he along with his wife went to their 15th floor flat but Gupta refused to vacate it.

The retired executive said that he had approached the police and also met district magistrate over the issue.

"The district magistrate assured me he would forward our letter to the police commissioner." he said.

Meanwhile, DCP (central Noida) Harish Chander said the police cannot help them unless there was a court order.

According to a latest TOI report, the residents of the society also held a candle march protest at Ek Murti Chowk on Tuesday to extend their support to the couple.

"It is very sad to see the couple spending nights outside their flat. We will continue with our protest till the time they get their flat back,” Ashutosh Srivastava, a society resident.
