Grand offering of 51 kg modak to Lord Ganpati in Bihar's Gaya

As part of the ongoing Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, ardent devotees in Bihar's Powerganj area have prepared and presented a colossal 51-kilogram Modak to Lord Ganpati. This monumental Modak, a traditional Maharashtrian festive dumpling, was thoughtfully embellished with an assortment of dry fruits, including almonds, pistachios, cashews, and raisins.

The Modak, a culinary masterpiece in its own right, is crafted from rice flour dough and filled with a sweet blend of coconut and jaggery. These delectable sweet dumplings hold deep cultural significance, lovingly handmade and offered to Lord Ganesh during the auspicious 9-day Ganesh Chaturthi Festival, symbolizing blessings of wealth and prosperity for the faithful.

Ganesh Chaturthi, spanning a period of ten days, commences on the fourth day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month 'Bhadrapada.' This year, the festivities commenced on September 19, marking the commencement of this sacred occasion. The festival encompasses a journey from 'Chaturthi' to 'Anantha Chaturdashi,' signifying profound spiritual significance.


According to legend, Lord Ganesh descends to Earth during this period to bestow blessings upon his devoted followers. After enriching the lives of devotees for ten days, he embarks on his journey back to his celestial abode atop the magnificent 'Kailash Parvat,' reuniting with his divine parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

This esteemed festival is known by various names, including 'Vinayak Chaturthi' or 'Vinayak Chavithi,' in different regions. It pays homage to Ganesh as the 'God of New Beginnings,' the 'Remover of Obstacles,' and the guardian deity of wisdom and intelligence.
