New Delhi, Dec 8 (IANS) Doctors on Friday cautioned the use of Meftal among children, pregnant and lactating women, after the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) issued an alert against the drug.
In a recent advisory issued by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), concerns have been raised regarding the safety of the widely used painkiller, Meftal. The alert highlights the potential risks associated with its active ingredient, mefenamic acid, which has been linked to severe allergic reactions.

DRESS syndrome, known as Drug Rash with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms, has emerged as a significant concern related to the use of Meftal. This hypersensitivity reaction, categorized as a type 4 response by medical experts, can lead to severe skin complications and organ-related issues, with a mortality rate of up to 10%.

Symptoms of DRESS syndrome, including skin rashes, fever, lymph node swelling, and abnormalities in blood, typically surface within two to eight weeks after consuming the drug. Immediate cessation of the suspect medication and the use of immunomodulatory drugs constitute the primary treatment for this syndrome.

Meftal, primarily prescribed for conditions like arthritis, pain, inflammation, and menstrual cramps, contains mefenamic acid and dicyclomine hydrochloride. However, the recent alert emphasizes the risks associated with mefenamic acid, which extends beyond DRESS syndrome to potential side effects like stomach ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and kidney problems, particularly with prolonged usage.

The advisory strongly advises individuals using Meftal to consult healthcare professionals to evaluate the associated risks and explore alternative pain management options. Self-medication, especially without prior consultation and for those with existing medical conditions or concurrent medication intake, is highly discouraged.

While Meftal has been effective in pain management, the government's alert emphasizes the importance of prioritizing individual safety and informed decision-making when considering its usage. Consulting a doctor and understanding the potential risks remain imperative in ensuring the well-being of those using this commonly available painkiller.
