Instead, the search engine settled on September 27, a date that has no direct connection to any major company milestone.

Multiple early milestones, no clear match

Google's early history is full of important dates, none of which line up with September 27. The google.com domain name was registered on September 15, 1997, a year before the company was incorporated. The company opened its office doors on September 7 that same year. Even the founders' work on the search engine itself began earlier, with development starting in the mid 1990s while Larry Page and Sergey Brin were still students.

How the birthday date kept shifting

Google's birthday has not always fallen on September 27. In its earlier years, the company celebrated on different days entirely. The announcement of its 5th birthday in 2003 came on September 8, followed by September 7 the year after, and September 26 in 2005. It was only since 2006 that September 27 became the date consistently used to mark the occasion.

This back and forth even confused people tracking the pattern closely. In 2003, the celebratory Doodle appeared on September 8, a year later it came a day earlier, then it suddenly jumped to September 26 in 2005, before settling into its current date the following year.

Why September 27 stuck

There is no official reason tied to September 27 itself. One theory points to Google's very first birthday Doodle, which may have been chosen simply because it was the date used for the company's first birthday Doodle back in 2002. Once that date appeared, it seems to have stayed in place out of habit rather than any historic significance.

Google itself has acknowledged the confusion in the past. In 2013, the company admitted it had celebrated its birthday on four different dates over the years, though September 27 has remained the one that stuck since.

A company spokesperson once explained the thinking behind treating the date loosely rather than strictly. The spokesperson noted there were many dates that could have been chosen, including the day the company incorporated, the day the first employee was hired, or the day the domain was registered, which is why the whole of September is often treated as Google's birthday month.

A birthday built on tradition, not paperwork

For a company built on organising information with precision, its own birthday remains one of the few things it has never pinned down exactly. Instead of relying on incorporation papers or domain records, Google has leaned into September 27 purely because that is the date the celebration began and continued.

So while today's Doodle celebrates 28 years of Google, the real anniversary of its incorporation quietly passed by three weeks ago, on September 4, largely unnoticed, just as it has for over two decades.
