India commemorates Good Governance Day, or Sushasan Diwas, every year on December 25 to honor the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The day emphasizes government accountability and citizen-centric governance to improve service delivery. This year marks Vajpayee’s 100th birth anniversary.

Good Governance Day: History and Significance

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. He served as India’s Prime Minister on three occasions: first in 1996 for 13 days, then from 1998 to 1999 for 13 months, and finally from 1999 to 2004 for a full term. Vajpayee, a celebrated poet and writer, was the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to become Prime Minister.

In 2014, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Vajpayee’s birthday as Good Governance Day. Vajpayee’s tenure saw several initiatives aimed at fostering good governance, including the Kisan Credit Card, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and the National Rural Health Programme. In 2015, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.

2024 Celebration Plans

To mark Vajpayee’s centenary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Madhya Pradesh on December 25. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, he will inaugurate and lay the foundation for several projects in Khajuraho.

One key initiative is the Ken-Betwa river linking project, India’s first under the national perspective plan. This project aims to provide irrigation facilities to districts in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, benefiting farmer families. Additionally, the Prime Minister will release a commemorative stamp and coin in Vajpayee’s honor and lay the foundation for 1,153 Atal Gram Sushasan buildings to support Gram Panchayats.

Sushasan Saptah Activities

As part of the Good Governance Week, or Sushasan Saptah, observed from December 19 to 25, the central government organizes events to raise awareness about efficient and transparent governance. These initiatives aim to instill a sense of responsibility among citizens and government officials alike.
