God of War Laufey Playstation launch date: Santa Monica confirms release, teases next Kratos chapter; check details

Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Laufey will launch for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) on February 16, 2027. The studio also announced that the next mainline Kratos-led God of War game will directly continue the story established in Laufey.

The announcements were made during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

Faye takes centre stage in the new story

God of War Laufey follows Faye after her death as she awakens in the Everywhen, a realm where gods from different mythologies compete for power. Her mission is to protect the future she envisioned for Kratos and Atreus while battling through the dangers of the mysterious realm.


Santa Monica Studio Head of Creative Cory Barlog said the game expands the franchise by exploring new characters while continuing the overarching narrative.

"Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next," Barlog said.

He added that the game is designed to deepen the God of War universe, with its story laying the groundwork for future titles.

Next Kratos game will follow directly

Barlog confirmed that the next Kratos-led God of War title will connect directly to the events of God of War Laufey. However, he did not reveal its title, setting, release timeline or target platforms.

Gameplay shown during June's PlayStation State of Play opened with Kratos and Atreus performing Faye's funeral, a scene first referenced in 2018's God of War. Kratos also appears briefly later in the footage, although the extent of his role in Laufey remains unknown.

Fans divided over Kratos taking a back seat

The announcement has generated mixed reactions among fans. While many praised the game's combat system and visuals, others questioned the decision to shift the focus away from Kratos, who has been the central protagonist of the franchise for nearly two decades.

Physical disc sparks debate

The game's physical disc also became a talking point after its reveal. Some fans speculated that it could be one of Sony's final major first-party physical releases, citing reports that the company may phase out PlayStation game discs by 2028.

More God of War projects in development

When God of War Laufey was unveiled in June 2026, Santa Monica Studio said it had "many more stories to tell" featuring Kratos. The latest announcement reinforces that commitment.

The studio is also developing a God of War Greek Trilogy Remake, which remains in early development. Together, the upcoming projects outline PlayStation's long-term roadmap for one of its biggest gaming franchises.
