Google has introduced the ability for users to change their Google Account email that ends in @gmail.com to a new @gmail.com address. The update was highlighted by CEO Sundar Pichai on X, who posted: “2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn’t need to be stuck in it.” Users can now select any available name while keeping the old username as an alternate.

The feature is gradually rolling out and may not be available to everyone yet. It is available only in U.S right now.

Gmail username update: Step-by-Step Guide to Change Old Email ID

  • On a computer, visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email and sign in if prompted.
  • At the top left, click Personal info > Email > Google Account email.
  • Under “Google Account email”, click Change Google Account email.
  • Enter a new available username, click Change email > Yes, change email, and follow the on-screen steps.
  • The old address automatically becomes an alternate email.

How It Benefits Old Gmail Users

Long-time users stuck with outdated or embarrassing addresses from Gmail’s 2004 launch can now update to a more professional or preferred @gmail.com name without creating a new account. All photos, messages, emails, Drive files and settings remain intact. Users can still sign in with either address and receive mail at both, making the switch seamless for personal and professional use.

What Happens After You Change Your Google Account Email

Your previous @gmail.com address becomes a permanent alternate email. You will receive messages at both old and new addresses. No data is lost. You can switch back to the old address anytime, but you cannot create another new @gmail.com address for the next 12 months or delete the new one. Some services may require updating Sign in with Google or remote connections. Google recommends backing up data as a precaution.
