The upcoming Netflix film Ghooskhor Pandat has sparked a massive political and legal firestorm, leading to its teaser being scrubbed from the internet. The controversy centers on the film's title, which critics argue the title "Ghooskhor Pandat" (Bribe-taking Brahmin) deliberately links a respected caste identifier with criminal activity.

Ghooskhor Pandat Controversy: What's Behind Mayawati's Ban Demand?

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has spearheaded the political backlash, describing the title as a "matter of great sorrow and concern." In a pointed statement on X, she condemned the portrayal of the Brahmin community as "corrupt," claiming it spreads intense anger and disrespect across the country. Mayawati has formally called on the Central Government to impose an immediate ban on the film, supporting the Lucknow Police's decision to register an FIR against filmmaker Neeraj Pandey and his team at the Hazratganj Police Station.

Ghooskhor Pandat Controversy: The Legal Battle and NHRC Intervention

The controversy has moved beyond social media into the courtrooms. A writ petition was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking an immediate stay on the film’s release, arguing that the title is "communally offensive" and violates fundamental rights under Articles 14, 21, and 25. Simultaneously, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The complaint alleges that the film "promotes negative stereotypes" and "vilifies a recognized social group," reflecting a gross insensitivity toward India’s social fabric.

Ghooskhor Pandat Controversy: Director Neeraj Pandey and Manoj Bajpayee’s Defense

Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey and lead actor Manoj Bajpayee have issued official statements clarifying that the film is a fictional cop drama and not a statement on any community. Pandey explained that "Pandat" is merely a colloquial nickname for the protagonist, Ajay Dikshit, a flawed police officer. Bajpayee added that his character’s journey is one of "self-realization" and that the makers have decided to pull down all promotional materials—including the teaser—to respect the public sentiment and ensure the film is eventually judged in its full context rather than by its title alone.
