The only change in India’s playing XI for the T20 World Cup Super 8 clash and the one that sparked widespread debate was the exclusion of Axar Patel in favour of Washington Sundar. India went on to suffer a crushing 76-run defeat. Sundar managed just 11 runs with the bat and bowled only two overs in the match.

Manjrekar Mocks Gautam Gambhir’s Decision

A former Indian cricketer took a dig at head coach Gautam Gambhir’s call to bring in Sundar, describing him as the coach’s “one-stop solution for everything.”

“Kailash Jeevan — there used to be a medicine by that name back in the day. If you had a headache, you'd apply it. If you had a stomachache, you'd take it. It was an all-in-one remedy. Gautam Gambhir seems to have one remedy for all problems. Everybody knows his name, Washington Sundar. If there's a batting issue, Washi is the answer. If there's a bowling problem, same answer. He was promoted up the order. Rinku Singh came at No. 6, Hardik Pandya came at No. 7 today, and Rinku... it's a bit too much,” Manjrekar said on Sports Next.

Must-Win Situation for India

Following the heavy loss to South Africa, India now find themselves in a must-win scenario in their remaining two Super 8 matches — against Zimbabwe on Thursday and West Indies on Sunday.

South Africa outclassed India by 76 runs in the Super Eight encounter, forcing the team management to reconsider the performances of key players. Abhishek Sharma has scored just 15 runs in four matches, while Tilak Varma has managed 107 runs in five games at a strike rate of 118.

Concerns Over Middle-Order Performance

Designated finisher Rinku Singh’s numbers have also raised serious concerns. He has accumulated only 24 runs off 29 balls, registering a disappointing strike rate of 82.75, figures that are far from ideal in the shortest format.
