Gary Kirsten, the coach who guided India to the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup title, has praised Islamabad's natural beauty after exploring the city's Margalla Hills on a mountain bike. Mountain biking is one of Kirsten's favourite hobbies. The Margalla Hills, located on Islamabad's northern edge, are a popular destination for hikers, cyclists and nature enthusiasts. Their forested slopes and elevated viewpoints offer views of the Pakistani capital.

From India's World Cup triumph to Pakistan's coach

Kirsten remains a familiar name among Indian cricket fans for his role in the country's 2011 World Cup victory. India defeated Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai, ending a 28-year wait for the ODI World Cup title. After his playing career as a South African opening batter, Kirsten established himself as an international coach. He was appointed Pakistan's white-ball head coach in 2024 but stepped down in October that year, around six months after taking charge.

In 2026, he took over as Sri Lanka's head coach on a two-year contract, with the responsibility of preparing the team for major international competitions.

Sri Lanka face Pakistan in ODI tri-series

Kirsten's visit came as Sri Lanka competed in an ODI tri-series in Pakistan, featuring the hosts and England. Sri Lanka lost their opening match against Pakistan in Rawalpindi on October 18 by 37 runs. Pakistan scored 305, powered by Salman Ali Agha's 107 off 90 balls and Babar Azam's 45.

Sri Lanka fought back through Pavan Rathnayake, who scored 79, and Janith Liyanage, who made 60. However, the team was bowled out for 268 in 48.1 overs.
