Lord Ganesha, revered as the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings, is welcomed with elaborate processions and heartfelt prayers. His presence holds a special place in every Hindu household.

In 2025, Ganesh Chaturthi falls in August, promising a day full of devotion, energy, and sacred rituals across the country. The festival’s charm lies not just in its traditions and pujas, but in the unity and emotions it evokes. From bringing Ganesha home to preparing sweets like modaks, and the bittersweet farewell during visarjan, every moment is filled with love and significance.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 Date and Timings

In 2025, Ganesh Chaturthi will be observed on Wednesday, 27 August. The Chaturthi Tithi begins on 26 August at 1:54 PM and ends on 27 August at 3:44 PM, as per Drik Panchang.

Why Ganesh Chaturthi is Celebrated

The festival has deep historical roots. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj promoted Ganesh Chaturthi during the Maratha Empire to encourage social unity and devotion. Later, during British rule, Lokmanya Tilak transformed it into a large-scale public celebration to foster togetherness and nationalism among Indians, turning the festival into a movement that united communities.

The Legend of Lord Ganesha’s Birth

According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from turmeric paste and assigned him the task of guarding her while she bathed. When Lord Shiva returned and was denied entry, a confrontation ensued. Shiva, unaware, severed Ganesha’s head. Seeing Parvati’s grief, Shiva revived Ganesha with an elephant’s head, blessing him to be worshipped first among all gods. This established Ganesha as the “Pratham Pujya” and “Vighnaharta,” the first to be worshipped and the remover of obstacles.

How to Perform Ganesh Puja at Home

Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi at home can be both simple and spiritually fulfilling. Start by waking up early, taking a bath, and placing Lord Ganesha’s idol on a clean, decorated altar. Offer modaks, durva grass, flowers, and sweets. Light a diya and recite mantras with devotion.

A powerful mantra to begin with is: “Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.”

You may also chant these traditional mantras during your prayers:
“Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha, Nirvighnam KuruMe Deva Sarvakaryeshu Sarvada.”
“Ekadantam Mahakayam Lambodaram Gajananam, Vighneshwaram Devam Herambam Pranamamyaham.”
