Stock markets
Indian stock markets, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), will remain closed on Wednesday, October 2, in observance of Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra. No trading will take place across equity, derivatives, or securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments on this day. However, trading in currency and interest rate derivatives segments will continue as usual.

Banks

All banks across India will be shut for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday.

Liquor shops:

October 2, 2025 is declared a dry day, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra. All liquor outlets, including shops, pubs, bars, and restaurants, will remain closed, with strict bans on alcohol sales and service.

Oct 2 holiday: Schools and colleges

Durga Puja in West Bengal has brought the longest school break in the state, with institutions officially closed from September 26 to October 7. Heavy rainfall and flooding in Kolkata and nearby areas led to additional closures on September 24 and 25. Schools are expected to reopen only after October 7, giving students and staff ample time to take part in rituals and cultural programmes.

In Delhi, the Directorate of Education has announced an autumn break from September 29 to October 1, while October 2 will also be a holiday for Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra. Schools will reopen on October 3, with private schools following a similar schedule except for minor variations.

In Andhra Pradesh, government schools will remain shut for Dussehra from September 22 to October 2, 2025. The decision came after Members of the Legislative Council appealed to HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, showing how political lobbying has influenced the academic calendar.

Telangana schools have been closed since September 21 and will resume classes on October 3 as per the state’s academic calendar, which allows time for local festival celebrations.

In Uttar Pradesh, holiday schedules vary across districts. Many schools will be shut from September 27 to October 2, covering both Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti, while some districts will have shorter breaks. Parents have been advised to check with their respective schools for exact dates.

In Maharashtra, several districts have declared school holidays on September 29 for Dussehra. Palghar schools were also closed earlier due to heavy rainfall. Most schools across the state will remain shut on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti, with reopening dates depending on local education authority announcements.

In Bihar and Jharkhand, schools are closed from September 27 and will reopen only after October 2. Assam and Odisha follow varying schedules depending on the district and type of school, with changes often made to align with local festivals or administrative requirements.
