October 2 is observed as Gandhi Jayanti annually. The day is celebrates as the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi,
is also affectionately known as Bapu or "Father of the Nation". Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar in Gujarat. The title -- Father of the Nation -- was given to him by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Mahatma Gandhi went to London to complete his law degree and then went to South Africa to practice barrister. When he was in South Africa, he observed that Indians were treated poorly and belonged to a lower section of people along with the other people of color. After return from South Africa, he joined national Congress to challenge the British rule in India.


He led the Independence struggle against the British Empire and played a very important role in India's independence after 200-years of British rule through his non-violence movements. He led numerous movements against the British rule including Dandi March, Quit India movement, do-or-die and non-cooperation movement.

Gandhi Jayanti is observed as the National holiday. In 2007, the UN General Assembly also declared the day as the International Day of Nonviolence.
