Galle weather causes another delay as India vs Sri Lanka Test enters Day 2 after rain disrupts final session of Day 1

India's second day of the opening Test against Sri Lanka was delayed by rain in Galle on Sunday, preventing the visitors from beginning their innings as persistent showers disrupted play for the second consecutive day.

India had finished the opening day at 288/2 after Devdutt Padikkal registered his maiden Test century. The left-hander remained unbeaten on 131 from 178 balls, having struck 12 fours and a six, while Rishabh Pant was not out on 27 off 36 deliveries with two boundaries.

Padikkal anchors India's strong position

Padikkal took charge of India's first innings after Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 32 off 37 balls following a mix-up that resulted in a run-out. Jaiswal and KL Rahul had added 47 for the opening wicket before India reached 101/1 at lunch.


Rahul then combined with Padikkal for a 150-run second-wicket partnership from 252 balls. Rahul scored 77 off 162 deliveries before retiring hurt after suffering cramps in his arm during the humid conditions.

Padikkal brought up his century from 134 balls in only his third Test, continuing his innings despite two rain interruptions during the second and third sessions.

Rain disrupts day 1 of India vs Sri Lanka

The second session on Saturday began almost two hours late after heavy rain during the lunch interval left the outfield wet. Playing time was extended until 6 p.m. local time, with a further extension dependent on the light.

Padikkal and Rahul dominated the Sri Lankan bowling during the available play and went to tea with India on 197/1. Padikkal reached 50 from 81 balls, while Rahul completed his half-century from 127 deliveries.

Rain returned during the final session, forcing another interruption as the ground staff covered the playing area. Although sunshine appeared alongside the showers, the wet conditions continued to disrupt the contest.

Sri Lanka eventually claimed its second wicket when skipper Shubman Gill was caught off spinner Prabath Jayasuriya for 16. Jayasuriya had taken the wicket in his 21st over.

Pant joins Padikkal before bad light ends play

After Rahul was unable to resume his innings, Pant joined Padikkal at the crease and attacked the Sri Lankan spinners during the closing stages. Pant remained unbeaten on 27, with his innings including two boundaries.

Bad light then brought the day's play to an early close, leaving Padikkal unbeaten on 131 and India firmly placed at 288/2.

India had won the toss and elected to bat in Galle, where both teams fielded spin-heavy attacks. The match is being played as part of a two-Test series, with both sides seeking crucial points to remain in contention for the 2027 World Test Championship final. India entered the series in fifth place, while Sri Lanka were sixth.
