Some areas of Maharashtra may see heavy rain, thunder, and gusty winds from May 21 to May 24 due to a weather system forming over the Arabian Sea, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the east-central Arabian Sea, near the Karnataka coast. A low-pressure area is expected to form around May 22, which may move northwards and get stronger.

Shubhangi Bhute, a senior official at the Met department, said that the rain in Maharashtra is expected to increase during this period because of the developing weather system.

The rain may affect several regions including south Konkan, south central Maharashtra, and Mumbai.

“There is a chance of heavy rainfall with thunder at some places. Gusty winds may blow at speeds of 30-40 kmph, and even higher in some isolated spots,” Bhute added.

Residents are advised to stay alert and follow weather updates from official sources.
