From 80k to NEET PG 2026 admission: Aspirant shares how he turned things around 13 years after MBBS despite repeated failures

After announcement of NEET PG 2026 result, an aspirant from the 2013 MBBS batch has shared a personal account of returning to the exam preparation years after graduation, saying the experience changed his belief that older medical graduates are automatically at a disadvantage. The aspirant, writing on Reddit, said he had appeared for NEET PG several times in the past and secured ranks of around 26,000, 50,000, 90,000 and 80,000. However, he said he did not give the exam his full effort in most of those attempts. According to his post, during his other attempts, he was largely focused on preparing for the PLAB examination, while NEET PG was something he continued to take partly because of expectations from people around him.

NEET PG rank around 7,500 after years away from academics

The aspirant said he eventually decided to make NEET PG his priority and give the examination everything he had. This time, he said, the effort resulted in a rank in the 7,500 range. While he acknowledged that the rank may not be considered extraordinary by some aspirants, he described the result as deeply satisfying because of the circumstances surrounding his preparation.


For years, he said he had heard comments such as being "too late", facing competition from fresh graduates and having missed the right time to pursue postgraduate medical education. He eventually started believing those concerns himself. But his experience has led him to a different conclusion.

'Being from an older batch doesn't automatically mean you've missed your chance'

The Reddit user said preparing after several years away from academics was not easy. Getting back into a regular study routine was one of the challenges, and there were days when studying was the last thing he wanted to do. He also acknowledged that preparation came with setbacks and moments when he questioned whether the effort would ultimately be worth it.

At the same time, he said his experience showed him that the number of years since graduation should not by itself become a reason to abandon the goal of pursuing PG medical education. His message was aimed particularly at doctors from older batches who may feel that they have fallen too far behind younger candidates.

'You may not get the rank you dream of'

The aspirant did not suggest that an older-batch candidate would necessarily achieve a particular rank. Instead, he acknowledged that the preparation could require more effort and that the final result might not match expectations. His central argument was that candidates should not decide in advance that success is impossible simply because several years have passed since graduation.

"You may not get the rank you dream of," he wrote, while encouraging aspirants to give themselves an honest attempt if NEET PG is something they genuinely want to pursue.

He also offered to speak with other aspirants about his preparation process and what he did differently in this attempt. For aspirants who feel they are already too far behind, his advices: do not let the number of years since graduation make the decision for you.

"I was that person too," he wrote.
