From ₹40 Lakh Pay to Rapido Driver: Techie who bought ₹1.4 cr flat 2 year ago now struggles to pay ₹95k home loan EMI after layoff

A former techie, once earning ₹40 lakh per annum salary, now drives a bike taxi to manage a ₹95,000 monthly home loan EMI after losing his job. As per a viral video, his ₹1.4 crore flat, bought with confidence in his stable income, has become a so...

Tech layoff news
A techie who once earned ₹40 lakh a year is now forced to ride a bike taxi to keep up with a ₹95,000 monthly home loan EMI after being laid off by the company. As per a viral video, the man had purchased a ₹1.4 crore 3BHK flat in 2024 in a society in NCR, confident about his steady income. But three months of unemployment have pushed him into a daily struggle to hold on to that same house.

Back in 2024, the techie’s career looked stable. With a high-paying job in hand, he went ahead and booked a flat in Prateek Grand City. The decision felt right at the time. A premium home, a steady salary, and a long-term plan, everything seemed aligned.

Friends remember his excitement. Buying a spacious apartment in a sought-after project was a milestone he had worked towards for years. The EMI appeared manageable against his income, and the future looked predictable.

Layoff flips the script

The situation changed abruptly when he lost his job. Three months without income have turned the same EMI into a constant source of stress. The bank payments did not pause, even as his salary stopped.

To cope, he started working as a Rapido rider. Each trip now helps him gather small amounts to meet the large monthly commitment. The shift from a corporate job to riding through city traffic reflects how quickly circumstances can change.

A friend who recently visited him said the emotional toll is visible. The uncertainty around finding a new job has only added to the pressure.

Nights of regret and anxiety

The friend narrated that the home that once brought pride now brings worry. He spends sleepless nights thinking about the decision he made. The story captures a silent fear many professionals carry, that a single disruption can undo years of planning. In his case, the gap between a high salary and zero income became painfully clear.

When high income isn’t enough

His daily routine now revolves around earning just enough to stay afloat. Long hours on the road have replaced office work. Every rupee goes toward the EMI, leaving little room for anything else.

The case underlines a wider reality. In sectors like IT, strong pay packages often create a sense of security. But loans tied to long tenures do not adjust to sudden job losses.

A question many are asking

The account, shared by a friend after a recent visit, has sparked conversations online. It reflects the vulnerability of middle-class households where one income supports big financial decisions.

The question it leaves behind is simple but unsettling: what would you do if your biggest asset suddenly became your biggest burden?

The flat in Prateek Grand City still stands as it did in 2024. But for its owner, it now represents a daily race to stay financially afloat rather than a symbol of success.

Recent Oracle Layoffs

A US-based IT major, Oracle, reportedly laid off nearly 12,000 employees in India last week. Sources say another round of job cuts could follow within a month. Globally, the company is believed to have reduced its workforce by around 30,000. Oracle has roughly 30,000 employees in India.

In an internal email, Oracle informed employees about organisational changes, stating that the move aims to streamline operations. It added that due to these changes, some roles would become redundant.

As part of the exit terms in India, employees have been offered 15 days’ salary for each year of service, along with one month’s unpaid wages until the termination date, leave encashment, gratuity where applicable, and a one-month notice period payout. An additional two months’ salary has also been proposed as a top-up.

However, this severance package applies only to those who choose to resign voluntarily and settle the matter amicably.

Meanwhile, former Oracle employee Merugu Sridhar claimed he was laid off in September after raising concerns over a 16-hour work schedule. He also said that many Indian employees working in the US have been affected, as stricter labour laws there make retrenchment more complex.
