From ₹3 LPA to ₹60 lakh in 3 years: How a 29-year-old small-college techie from a tier-3 city turned setbacks into success
A 29-year-old engineer from a modest background achieved a remarkable career leap, securing a Rs 60 lakh per annum offer from a global unicorn. His journey, marked by perseverance through job loss during the pandemic and unexpected opportunities, ...

From modest roots to first job
Born into a middle-class family, the engineer grew up in a 500 sq ft, two-bedroom apartment, sharing clothes with his elder brother and wrapping his school lunch in recycled Lay’s packets. Coming from a tier-2 college in a small city, his career began like many others — with a modest campus placement at a French multinational offering ₹3.15 lakh per annum. His first in-hand salary was just Rs 9,500. Over the next year, he saw small increments that took his pay to Rs 30,000 a month. But his dedication and strong work ethic went unnoticed, his manager “forgot” to fill out his performance review, costing him a promotion and a raise. When the same manager mocked him, saying not everyone can get promoted every year, the insult pushed him to make a bold decision: he quit without another offer lined up.
Unemployed during Covid, and an unexpected lifeline
Quitting during the peak of the pandemic proved to be a gamble. Facing criticism from his parents and no immediate prospects, he spent three months applying for jobs and MBA programs without success. Then, out of nowhere, a message on LinkedIn changed everything. An old Facebook friend, now an interviewer at a UAE-based firm, invited him for a chat. The discussion turned out to be more personal than technical — and it ended with a job offer of Rs 45,000 a month.
He started working immediately, even before receiving an official offer letter. Just as he was about to sign the contract, another call came, this time from a recruiter at a Fortune 500 company.
A breakthrough opportunity
Within 24 hours, he completed a series of late-night and early-morning interviews. The manager told him directly he was hired. In three days, he had an offer letter with a salary of Rs 14 lakh per annum, nearly five times his previous income. But this success came with its own challenges. The job required him to work graveyard shifts from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., leading to health issues. Still, he pushed through, earning quick promotions and raises that took his pay to ₹22.5 lakh per annum. By volunteering for weekend shifts, he even managed to add ₹24,000 more to his monthly income.
The life-changing leap
After three years of perseverance, a recruiter from a US-based unicorn reached out to him on LinkedIn. Initially, he wasn’t looking to switch jobs and treated the interview process as a self-assessment.But after clearing six rounds, he received a jaw-dropping offer, Rs 55 lakh as base pay and Rs 5 lakh worth of company stock, which has since appreciated to nearly Rs 60 lakh in value.
When his first paycheck arrived, it surpassed his 'entire first-year salary' from his debut job.
A journey of resilience and self-belief
His story is a reminder that talent and grit can break through systemic limitations, regardless of one’s background. From borrowing newspapers and saving spare change to negotiating a crore-level package, the young engineer’s journey underscores how persistence, skill-building, and a bit of luck can transform a life in today’s tech-driven world.
