Controversy is not new to Formula One, with many in the high-profile sport used to incidents every year. During Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the sport saw the resurgence of one such controversy.

The Italian Grand Prix finished under the safety car after McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo stopped on track due to a mechanical failure. Defending world champion Max Verstappen sealed his victory, followed by pole-sitter Charles Leclerc in second and Mercedes' George Russell in third.

According to the FIA rules, this is a perfectly acceptable outcome. However, the ending of this race has brought back memories of last year's final race in Abu Dhabi where the race was restarted for one final lap of racing, which ended up aiding Verstappen to his first ever championship.

Sunday's finish in Monza was a reminder to many fans that the only time there was a diversion from the rules was in 2021, which led to seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton finishing second in the standings.

Fans of the sport have taken to Twitter to vent their misgivings, trending the hashtag #F1xed.

The Abu Dhabi race of 2021 has been under scrutiny since it ended, prompting many a Twitter feud, with fans calling the FIA a fraud and then race director Michael Masi an abettor in Verstappen's title win.

After an investigation into the events of 2021, the FIA concluded that it was simply a case of human error and replaced Masi as the race director for the upcoming season.
