Roka ceremony on a strict budget
Simran Kaur is the host of the finance podcast Girls That Invest and a former optometrist. She posted details of her roka budget online, stating she had set aside 10,000 New Zealand dollars but ended up spending much less.“How much money we spent on my rokha/engagement (as a millionaire),” she wrote in her Instagram post. She went on to list her spending:
Hair and makeup: $400
Mehendi: $40
Lehenga: $300, sourced from a wholesaler in India
Jewellery: $39, all artificial
Venue: no cost, held at her parents’ home
Kaur added that her fiancé’s family provided tables for the function. She noted that while food was one of the major expenses, they did not serve alcohol, which helped reduce costs further.
Investor calls out rising costs of celebrations
Kaur used her platform to highlight the financial strain that weddings and engagement ceremonies can create for young couples.“The wedding/engagement industry is absolutely out of CONTROL and so many young couples feel pressure to take on debt, or drain their savings to capture a picture perfect event,” she wrote.
“I genuinely think social media (and Pinterest!!!) plays a huge part in the pressure we put on ourselves,” she added. “Here is a reminder that you can have a financially responsible and still lovely milestone event.”
Social media reacts to her post
Her post drew mixed reactions. While some users questioned her use of the word “millionaire” in the context of the post, others praised her approach and message. Many supported her call for financial responsibility, especially from influencers with large audiences. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
