Brazilian football fans are holding a vigil in front of So Paulo's Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, where Pelé was admitted last Tuesday with health issues related to his colon cancer, which was diagnosed in September 2021.

Around 70 supporters from the 82-year-former old's club Santos, as well as several reporters from Brazil and around the world, could be seen outside the hospital's oncological wing yesterday morning.

The three-time world champion was hospitalised on Tuesday as part of ongoing colon cancer treatments, a situation that was first identified in September 2021.

Pele, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, was declared "stable" by doctors at Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital on Saturday.

According to the announcement, Pele "has had a good response to care with no worsening in the clinical picture in the last 24 hours." Later, in an Instagram post, the star expressed optimism, writing, "My friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive." I'm strong and hopeful, and I'm continuing with my treatment as usual."

On Sunday, his supporters stood mostly silently outside the clinic in the western Sao Paulo neighbourhood of Morumbi, holding a banner with a picture of a young Pele and the words "Torcida Joven" ("Young Fans"). "Long live the king!" read a number of posters pasted on hospital walls near entrances. Around midday, the followers formed a circle and recited "Our Father" while holding their fingers together.

Reportedly, Pele had stopped responding to chemotherapy and was now only receiving "palliative care”. The hospital and Pele's family have yet to confirm this. However, amid the alleged deterioration of the star's health, concern was growing in Brazil's soccer world and among atypical Brazilians.

"We're here to give him strength so that the king of football can recover," said Maicon Peterson, who came to the hospital vigil with his two-year-old son. "We're going through a lot, but he'll get through it, God willing."
