Fired Google recruiter pens LinkedIn post, asks for help: 'Heartbroken, devastated'
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has laid off hundreds of employees in its global recruiting division, making it the first "Big Tech" company to do so this quarter. The layoffs come as a result of a weakened economy and follow similar actio...

Alphabet's decision to downsize its workforce marks the first instance of a "Big Tech" company taking such a step this quarter. This move follows similar actions by industry giants like Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon earlier in 2023, as a weakened economy brought an end to their pandemic-driven hiring sprees.
One of those affected is a technical recruiter in Seattle who has been with the IT giant for four years. She conveyed her shock and sadness in an emotional LinkedIn post, writing, "I struggle making this post but unfortunately today I got laid off at my dream company." She also shared how Google had positively impacted her life.
Another Google recruiter in Colorado shared a similar sentiment, writing, "Welp, it happened! I was laid off this morning along with many talented individuals in Google's recruiting organization."
A Seattle-based technical recruiter who lost her job thanked Google for the opportunity in a particularly heartfelt email. "Growing up in a small town and attending a small university, I never dreamed of working at Google," she explained. For me, it was a pipe dream. But I got the job, and it was the best experience of my life. It exceeded my greatest dreams." She went on to convey her anguish and devastation at the turn of events, seeking new career prospects through her professional network.
It's worth noting that Google announced these massive layoffs in January of this year, affecting 12,000 employees worldwide.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the layoffs were necessary for the company's long-term health as a result of the economic downturn. "The fact that these changes will have an impact on the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me," he stated, "and I take full responsibility for the decisions that have led us here." Pichai also acknowledged that Google, as a nearly 25-year-old firm, would most certainly go through times of slow progress.
