A nine-year-old gamer reportedly ran up an advertising bill of $118,000 (approximately Rs 1.13 crore) after using his father’s company credit card to promote videos from his YouTube gaming channel featuring Minecraft and Roblox.

The incident was recounted by David Sarkisyan, a marketing professional and the boy’s father, who took control of his son’s YouTube channel, Mighty Mike Plays, and explained what happened in a video titled “Mighty Mike Plays is Over”.

Who is Mighty Mike Plays?

The YouTube channel involved in the incident is @MightyMikePlays67. Its About section describes the child as a “9-year-old gamer dude” who is “OBSESSED” with exploring Roblox and Minecraft.

The channel description says it features gaming adventures, builds and challenges involving the two games and invites other Roblox and Minecraft fans to follow along.

Sarkisyan said his son became interested in creating gaming content after spending hours watching other players on YouTube. When the boy was about eight, he asked his father if he could upload his own gameplay.

His father agreed and helped set up the necessary arrangements for him to livestream his games.

How the advertising spending began

According to Sarkisyan, his son became disappointed a few weeks later after noticing that his videos were attracting very few viewers.

The father then offered to run a small advertising campaign for one of the videos, spending about $20 to help generate additional views.

However, Sarkisyan said he made a crucial mistake by leaving his company’s payment details saved after setting up the campaign.

“What I didn’t think about, not even for a second, was that saving my company’s card meant it was just going to sit there afterward, pretty much available anytime he opened an app on his own,” he said.

Sarkisyan acknowledged that he should have been more cautious about leaving the card information accessible. He also said his son, being nine years old, did not fully understand the implications of the transactions.

“I did not think for one second that this was going to be an issue. Huge mistake on my part,” he said.

Rs 1 crore spent on video promotions

Sarkisyan said he discovered the scale of the spending after being called into a meeting involving his manager, corporate officials and members of the finance team.

During the meeting, he was shown the company’s advertising expenditure over the preceding three weeks. According to his account, $118,000 had been charged to the corporate credit card for promotional campaigns linked to his son’s gaming videos.

The campaigns reportedly promoted videos featuring titles such as “Mighty Mike”, “Epic Roblox” and Minecraft gameplay. Sarkisyan said three of the promoted videos had together accumulated about 200,000 views.

Channel shut down after spending spree

Sarkisyan said his son would face consequences over the incident, although he had not decided what the punishment would be at the time of his explanation.

For now, the father has stopped the Mighty Mike Plays channel following the unexpected advertising expenditure.

The incident has highlighted how saved payment information can allow children to make transactions when they have access to devices and accounts, although Sarkisyan placed responsibility on himself for leaving the company card details available.
