Brother takes Rs 35 lakh loan for sisters' wedding
A young man’s emotional promise to his dying father has turned into a story that many are now discussing online. After agreeing to take responsibility for the marriages of his ten sisters, the man says he is already buried under nearly ₹35 lakh in loans after conducting three weddings, and still has seven more to go. The story, shared through a viral social media video, has sparked conversations around family duty, wedding expenses and the financial pressure many people silently carry in Indian households.

A promise made beside a hospital bed

In the viral clip, the man recalls how his father had long wished for a son after the birth of ten daughters. As per the clip, things changed dramatically when his father was battling cancer. During his final days, he asked his son to make one promise, that he would personally arrange and fund the weddings of all ten sisters without depending on relatives or sharing the burden with anyone else.

The young man says he agreed instantly, without fully understanding what the commitment would mean years later.

Three weddings done, huge loans already taken

The man revealed that he has already arranged marriages for three sisters. But fulfilling those responsibilities came at a heavy financial cost.

According to him, the total debt has now reached around ₹35 lakh. With seven weddings still remaining, he estimates he may need another ₹2-3 crore in the coming years to continue fulfilling the promise while meeting family expectations linked to marriage ceremonies and gifts.

“After this, if any loan remains, I'll get married myself,” he says in the video with a smile that many viewers described as both emotional and heartbreaking.

“By the time my children are born, I'll be in my 60s or 70s – and they'll be toddlers!”

Social media divided over sacrifice and practicality

The video quickly gained attention online, with many users praising the man for standing by his father’s final wish despite the enormous pressure.

Several viewers called it an example of rare family commitment in modern times. One social media user wrote, “This is what real responsibility looks like.”

At the same time, others questioned whether such promises should come at the cost of someone’s entire future. Another user commented, “Family love is beautiful, but one must also think about one's own future.”

Many people also shared similar experiences from their own families, saying brothers often delay careers, savings and even their own marriages while arranging weddings for sisters.

Weddings and the pressure of social expectations

The viral story has once again highlighted how expensive weddings continue to place emotional and financial stress on many Indian families.

In several communities, families still feel pressure to organise large ceremonies, expensive gifts and grand celebrations to maintain social status. This often forces households to take loans or spend savings meant for education, healthcare or retirement.

A bigger conversation beyond one viral video

As debates continue online, the young man’s story has become more than just a viral clip. For many people, it reflects the emotional weight attached to promises, parental expectations and family honour in India.

Some users suggested that families should focus on simpler weddings and better financial planning instead of taking on massive debt. Others argued that cultural expectations around marriage need to change gradually to prevent future generations from facing similar burdens.

For now, the man says he remains committed to keeping the promise he made to his father, no matter how difficult the journey becomes.
