Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday launched the FASTag-based Annual Pass for private vehicles at Rs 3,000 per year, effective August 15, 2025.

This move aims to reduce travel cost and congestion for car, jeep, and van users on India’s national highways.

But that’s not all. The government is also preparing a larger shift toward barrier-free, satellite-tracked tolling.

What is the FASTag Annual Pass?

The new annual pass covers either 200 trips or one year of usage, whichever comes first. It is valid across all national highways for non-commercial vehicles and will soon be available for activation via the Rajmarg Yatra App and the official portals of NHAI and MoRTH.

In closed toll systems like the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, one trip includes both entry and exit. In open systems such as Delhi–Chandigarh, each toll booth passed counts as a separate trip. Users may recharge their account once the 200 trips are used up.

Fastag Annual Pass: Why has it been introduced?

Gadkari said the pass addresses long-standing issues including public complaints about toll plazas within 60 km of each other and delays caused by manual tolling. It is also designed to reduce disputes, queue times, and traffic congestion, making road travel simpler for millions of private vehicle owners.

Fastag Annual Pass: How much can you save with it?

Currently, commuters who use a specific toll regularly pay ₹340 monthly per pass—totalling ₹4,080 a year. The new ₹3,000 pass replaces this fragmented system with a single, national-level plan, potentially saving users up to ₹1,000 or more annually.

FASTag annual pass introduced: What more is in the pipeline?

Government officials confirmed that the FASTag Annual Pass is just the first step in a larger digital overhaul of toll systems. Key proposals include:

  • Removing physical boom barriers
  • Introducing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
  • Using GPS and satellite tracking for toll collection
  • Ensuring real-time revenue tracking and operator compensation
