Fake IAS officer exposed by viral Vidhan Sabha vlog: How this MP woman built a convincing govt identity with fake IDs & staged photos

A government identity card, a luxury vehicle and a few carefully staged photographs can create an illusion of authority. Recent cases reported in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar show how people accused of impersonating IAS officers allegedly built such identities to gain trust, influence and, in some cases, money.

According to TOI reports, those allegedly involved used forged documents, social media posts, official-looking vehicles and claims of political or government connections to make their stories appear credible.

The latest case to attract attention is that of Tripti Singh Rajput in Bhopal, where police allege that she posed as an IAS officer and claimed to hold a senior position in the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department.

Bhopal case: Video allegedly exposed fake IAS identity

The investigation came under scrutiny after a video featuring three women claiming to be IAS officers circulated online.

In the video, one woman says they had visited the Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha but were recording outside because photography was not permitted inside. Another woman jokes that their behaviour would make it difficult for anyone to believe they were IAS officers.

Police later allegedly found that the video had not been filmed outside the Vidhan Sabha. Investigators traced the location to a gallery inside the Anthropological Museum complex.

The two other women subsequently told police that Rajput had asked them to pose as IAS officers. They also alleged that Rajput had taken Rs 3 lakh from each of them after promising to help them become IAS officers.

Fake government documents, car with 'Government of India' marking

Rajput was arrested on August 23 by Chanderi police in Ashoknagar along with her brother Sudhanshu Singh.

Multiple FIRs have been registered in Bhopal and Ashoknagar, according to police.

During a search of Rajput's residence, investigators allegedly recovered government-looking identity cards, letterheads, joining documents, trophies and mementoes describing her as a trainee IAS officer.

Police also found a Toyota Innova bearing a strip marked “Government of India”.

Investigators are examining a laptop from which files were allegedly deleted, along with phone records and financial transactions. Police have also identified two people who allegedly supplied fake documents and are investigating whether more people were involved.

A purported fake CBI identity card is also being examined, including whether artificial intelligence may have been used to create it.

One complaint alleges that Rajput, her brother and an associate collected around Rs 49 lakh from a Seoni resident in instalments by promising to arrange a lease for an MP Tourism hotel. The promised lease allegedly did not materialise.

Indore case: Man allegedly posed as IAS officer to avoid hotel bill

Another case emerged in Indore shortly before the Bhopal investigation attracted attention.

Madhya Pradesh Police arrested 28-year-old Himanshu Panchal, a resident of Ahmedabad, for allegedly posing as an IAS officer.

According to police, Panchal hosted a party for 16 people at a five-star hotel. When it was time to settle the bill, he allegedly said that his personal assistant would pay it later and left without making the payment. The hotel staff became suspicious and alerted police.

A search of his rented accommodation allegedly led to the recovery of a black nameplate bearing the name “IAS Raj Soni” and the designation “District Collector”.

Police said Panchal could not produce documents establishing that he was an IAS officer. He was booked under Section 204 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly impersonating a public servant.

Investigators are also examining whether the alleged fake identity was used to obtain money or other benefits.

UP case: Fake IAS identity allegedly used in matrimonial search

The alleged impersonation cases extend beyond Madhya Pradesh.

In Uttar Pradesh, Etawah resident Pritam Kumar Nishad allegedly posed as an IAS officer while looking for a bride through a matrimonial group.

Police said he allegedly shared purported interview videos, photographs from offices and pictures with politicians to make his claimed identity appear authentic.

The woman's family later alleged that Rs 15 lakh was given as dowry, including Rs 10 lakh in cash and another Rs 5 lakh around the wedding.

Nishad allegedly disappeared after the marriage and was booked in connection with allegations of cheating, forgery and dowry-related offences.

Bihar case: Alleged fake IAS officer claimed Doval connection

In Bihar, police arrested Manish Gupta in Khagaria in August after he allegedly claimed to be an IAS officer as well as an undercover agent working under National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

Police said Gupta produced a Central Vigilance Commission card and an alleged IAS identity card. Preliminary verification, however, reportedly found the claims to be false.

During a search of his residence, police allegedly seized a Tesla, an SUV, more than 31 litres of imported liquor and other items.

How fake identities can appear convincing

While the circumstances of the cases differ, investigators' allegations point to a similar strategy: establish an appearance of authority first and then use that credibility to influence other people.

Official-looking identity cards, government-style letterheads, photographs with politicians, luxury vehicles, social media posts and claims of access to senior officials can all contribute to a carefully constructed persona.
