What Is Piezoelectricity?
Piezoelectricity is a process in which certain materials generate an electric charge when mechanical stress is applied to them. In simple terms, pressure creates electricity.In Japan’s approach, piezoelectric sensors are installed beneath specially designed flooring. When people walk over these surfaces, the pressure from each step creates mechanical stress. This stress is then converted into electrical energy. The electricity produced can be stored or used immediately to power low-energy devices.
While the energy generated from a single step is small, the impact increases significantly in crowded areas where thousands of people pass through every day.
Where Is Footstep Energy Being Used in Japan?
One of the most well-known examples is at Shibuya Station in Tokyo. As one of the busiest railway stations in the world, Shibuya sees heavy foot traffic daily.
