Temperatures climbed to 40°C across parts of Europe
Temperatures climbed to 40°C (104°F) across parts of Europe on Sunday, while storms swept through other regions, as France reported around 1,000 excess deaths linked to the ongoing record-breaking heatwave.

France's public health agency said the majority of heat-related deaths were among older people and warned the toll is likely to increase as more data from care homes and private residences becomes available.

Scientists have described the heatwave, which began on June 20, as one of the most severe ever recorded in Europe. The extreme temperatures have disrupted power generation, damaged infrastructure, and placed immense pressure on healthcare systems across the continent.
