‘English Vinglish’ to release in China on February 24 to honour Sridevi’s fifth death anniversary

English Vinglish, starring Sridevi, is all set to release in China on February 24, the fifth anniversary of the late actor’s death. It will be played in 6,000 Chinese mainland theatres. It was released in Indian theatres on October 5, 2012.

Sridevi’s comeback to cinema after a 15-year absence was marked by Gauri Shinde's directorial debut.

Sridevi played a housewife who decided to take English classes in the United States after being teased by her husband and daughter. She feels better about herself after meeting new people in her new class.


Kumar Ahuja, COO of Eros International, stated in a statement on the forthcoming China release, “Indian films have steadily earned a foothold in the highly competitive Chinese cinema industry, the world's second largest. We have seen a rise in demand for Indian films in China Mainland, especially those with a strong cultural component. We are thrilled that this masterpiece, in which the late Bollywood actress Sridevi gives one of her most memorable performances, will be shown in China”.

Sushant Singh Rajput's Chhichhore was also released recently, followed by Tamil film Kanaa and Ajay Devgn's Drishyam. According to trade experts, releasing films in China may benefit Indian studios and filmmakers in the long run by not only increasing popularity in the neighbouring nation but also providing a strong opportunity to negotiate better revenue-sharing arrangements with Chinese distributors.

Sridevi was discovered dead at a Dubai hotel on February 24, 2018. She had travelled with her family to her nephew Mohit Marwah's wedding. She was married to Boney Kapoor, a producer. Their two daughters are Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor.
