He played an important role in the development of irrigation systems, water supply projects and engineering infrastructure in India. Sir M. Visvesvaraya is particularly remembered for his work in water management, irrigation and infrastructure. One of his notable engineering innovations was an automatic system of water floodgates, which was first installed at the Khadakwasla Reservoir near Pune and later influenced similar water-management projects.

He was also associated with the development of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, a landmark project that played an important role in irrigation and regional development in Mysore. His engineering work extended to flood-management initiatives in Hyderabad and efforts linked to the protection of Visakhapatnam Port.
