Money dispute strains marriage
The man said his wife was upset when she learnt about the transfer, leading to an argument over financial decisions and boundaries with relatives. The situation worsened after the promised repayment period passed without the relative returning the money or providing an update, according to his account. When he followed up about the outstanding amount, the relative allegedly accused him of being arrogant for asking his own family to repay the loan. The man said the experience had damaged the relationship and changed how he viewed lending money to relatives.
Reflecting on the incident, he said people are rarely taught how to establish financial boundaries within families. He added that he would either treat money given to relatives as a gift or politely decline such requests in the future. He also said he would ensure his wife was involved in every major financial decision.

Users share experiences of lending money to family
The post prompted users to share their own experiences of lending and borrowing money within families, with several discussing the emotional complications that can arise when repayment is delayed. One user said people should lend only an amount they could afford to lose without resentment, adding that even refusing a relative's request could lead to accusations of arrogance. Another questioned why lenders were shamed for asking borrowers to return money that was rightfully theirs.
A third user described a contrasting experience, recalling how their family borrowed Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh over two to three months after their mother suffered a haemorrhage. The user said their father eventually repaid everyone who had helped them. However, the user also recounted a separate incident involving a cousin who delayed repayment by six to seven months and repeatedly lied about the situation.
Another commenter argued that lending money to relatives could permanently damage relationships if the borrower failed to repay it. The user suggested keeping written records and considering safeguards when lending substantial amounts.
A further commenter said the lender and his wife had every right to seek repayment, suggesting that the borrower could be given additional time, such as 90 days, while making it clear that the money had to be returned.
