Elon Musk’s xAI is hiring Video Games Tutors, according to its careers page, to train and refine Grok, its AI system, in video game concepts, mechanics, and generation. The role focuses on enhancing Grok’s ability to create engaging and innovative games and supporting AI-assisted game design.

The AI Tutor will use the company's proprietary software to provide labels, annotations, and inputs on projects involving game mechanics, narratives, and design elements. The role includes delivering high-quality curated data that improves the AI’s understanding of gaming principles. Collaboration with technical staff is required to develop tasks and improve annotation tools, ensuring efficient workflows and refining AI-generated video game content.

Required qualifications



Candidates should demonstrate high proficiency in Game Design, Computer Science, Interactive Media, or related fields. Experience in game design, particularly indie game development, with a portfolio of projects, is essential. Candidates must show strong judgment in video game quality, including mechanics, storytelling, and player experience, and have the ability to test and evaluate AI-generated games for creativity, functionality, and engagement. Strong analytical, communication, and creative skills, as well as knowledge of game development tools and trends, are required.

Preferred qualifications


Experience in AI-assisted game development, playtesting, or roles at indie studios is preferred. A demonstrated history of playing video games extensively is considered an asset.

Location and work expectations

The position is based in Palo Alto, CA, or fully remote. Palo Alto-based roles require five days per week in-office work; remote roles require strong self-motivation. US applicants cannot be from Wyoming or Illinois, and visa sponsorship is not available. Team members are expected to work 9:00 am – 5:30 pm PST during the first two weeks of training and in their own timezone thereafter. Computers must be a Chromebook, Mac (MacOS 11.0 or later), or Windows 10 or later, and reliable smartphone access is required.

Salary and benefits


Hourly pay ranges from $45 to $100. Benefits vary by country and may include medical benefits depending on residency; part-time roles do not include benefits.
