Elon Musk hires AI researchers to create ChatGPT competitor

Billionaire Elon Musk reached out to artificial intelligence researchers in recent weeks to discuss the formation of a new research lab to develop an alternative to chatbot ChatGPT, according to the reports.


Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk is in talks to hire Igor Babuschkin, a researcher who recently left Alphabet’s DeepMind AI unit, to lead the development of the competition to high-profile chatbot made by startup OpenAI, reports suggest.



Babuschkin specialises in the machine-learning models that power chat bots such as ChatGPT, which has already cleared MBA exams, written prose, and poetry and is rapidly replacing workers in the United States. In an interview, Babuschkin stated that Musk’s goal is not to create a chatbot with fewer content safeguards.


The news comes at a time when Musk has criticised ChatGPT, calling it “scary good”. “We are not far away from dangerously strong AI,” he said in a December tweet.


He has previously criticised OpenAI for implementing safeguards that prevent ChatGPT from producing text that may offend users.

Earlier this month, the billionaire stated, “AI is one of the greatest threats to the future of civilization”. At the World Government Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, he also stated that it is both positive and negative, with great promise and capability, but “with that comes great danger”.

It is worth noting that Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but has since parted ways with the company.


According to reports, Musk and Babuschkin are in talks to form a team to pursue AI research, but the project is still in its early stages, with no concrete plan in place to develop specific products.
