Electricity bill reduced by 60%: Woman shares AC setting she claims helped slash monthly bill significantly

A content creator’s claim that a simple change in her air-conditioner setting helped bring down her monthly electricity bill by more than 60% has sparked discussion on X. Pooja, who posts as @poojaofficial5, said her bill fell from around Rs 3,500 to Rs 1,292 after she raised the AC temperature from 22°C to 28°C, while reporting similar daily usage.

She said the change worked out to a monthly difference of around Rs 2,208 and could amount to nearly Rs 26,500 in annual savings if the gap remained consistent.

AC bill fell after changing one setting

Pooja said she wanted to test whether running an AC at a higher temperature could reduce electricity consumption. She noted that many users immediately set their air conditioners between 18°C and 22°C, and decided to compare the costs of two different temperature settings.

For the first two months, she said she kept the AC at 22°C and used it for around five to seven hours a day. During that period, her monthly bill was about Rs 3,500.

She then raised the setting to 28°C and continued using the AC for roughly the same five to seven hours each day over the next two months.

According to her, the room took longer to cool, but eventually became comfortable enough at the higher setting. Her electricity bill during those two months was Rs 1,292 per month.

Pooja wrote that she had not purchased a new appliance or made any major investment. Instead, she said, the difference came from changing the temperature setting.

Why a higher setting may use less electricity

Pooja's post argued that setting an AC to a lower temperature can make the system work harder to maintain that target, while a higher setting can reduce the cooling load.

She also recommended cleaning AC filters regularly to help maintain efficiency.

At the same time, she acknowledged that the amount saved will vary depending on several factors, including room size, insulation, outdoor temperature, the efficiency of the AC and how many hours it is used each day.

Her broader point was that reducing electricity consumption does not necessarily require switching the AC off altogether, but can also involve changing how it is operated.

Users share their own AC temperature experiences

The post drew reactions from users who shared similar experiences.

One user praised the experiment, saying that raising the set temperature reduces the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures and can reduce compressor operation. The commenter described the reported fall from Rs 3,500 to Rs 1,292 as a useful real-world example and also highlighted the importance of cleaning filters.

Another user wrote, "Just a 6°C change in your AC setting and you'll save ₹2,208 a month! Sometimes, saving electricity doesn't require a big investment, just smart usage."

A third commenter said their bedroom AC was regularly set to 27°C with the fan on speed 2, adding that the system automatically switched off once the desired temperature was reached and that their electricity bill remained low.

Another user said all their ACs now run at 27°C with the fan on speed 2 or 3 and claimed this had reduced their electricity bill by more than 30%.

The commenter also said their family had remained comfortable during the summer and described the higher setting as beneficial for health.
