The injured couple, identified as Dayanand and Kusum Tagra, live in Kirti Nagar. Police said both are currently undergoing treatment in a hospital and are recovering. Their children live in the US.
Who was the SUV driver?
Police identified the accused as 49-year-old Navleen Kaur, a homemaker who resides in Kirti Nagar. Her husband is a businessman, according to police.CCTV footage showed the elderly couple walking along the road when a grey SUV allegedly hit them from behind at considerable speed.
Man thrown onto bonnet after impact
The force of the collision reportedly sent Dayanand onto the SUV's bonnet before he fell and hit his head on the road. Kusum, who was using crutches, was knocked to the side.Several passersby came forward to help the injured couple. Dayanand, who had reportedly become unconscious, was seen lying in the middle of the road with blood coming from his head.
Driver allegedly leaves after checking on couple
The CCTV footage captured the driver getting out of the SUV shortly after the collision. She appeared to check on the injured couple and remained around the spot briefly.She was then allegedly seen returning to the SUV and driving away from the location. Police later arrested her in connection with the incident.
Police register FIR, impound SUV
An FIR was registered at Kirti Nagar police station under Sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 125(a) (penalty for rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, police said.The SUV involved in the accident has been impounded as the investigation continues.
Kaur claims she suddenly “blacked out”
During questioning, Kaur allegedly told investigators that she was on her way home when she suddenly “blacked out”.
Police are also investigating whether she was using her mobile phone while driving when the accident occurred.
Investigators are examining CCTV recordings and other available evidence to piece together the sequence of events and determine whether any other circumstances played a role in the crash.
