Why Was Repolling Ordered In Falta?
The constituency initially went to polls on April 29 during the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.However, complaints soon emerged over alleged EVM tampering, voter intimidation and disruptions at several polling booths in South 24 Parganas district.
Reports also claimed that buttons linked to BJP candidates on some Electronic Voting Machines were partially covered with white tape, while several voters allegedly faced obstruction while attempting to cast ballots.
Following an investigation led by special poll observer Subrata Gupta, the Election Commission scrapped the earlier polling and ordered fresh voting across all 285 booths in the constituency.
Falta Repoll Witnessed Massive Voter Turnout
The repoll conducted on May 21 recorded an impressive voter turnout of over 87 per cent among the constituency’s 2.36 lakh voters. To ensure peaceful voting, nearly 35 companies of central forces were deployed throughout the area.
Several local residents later claimed the repoll was one of the few occasions where they were able to vote freely without fear or political pressure.
TMC Faced Unusual Situation Before Repoll
The constituency also witnessed political drama after Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan publicly announced just before the repoll that he would no longer contest the election. The All India Trinamool Congress later described his decision as a personal choice.
