Dusty switchboards? Try these simple and safe DIY cleaning hacks to remove dirt, grease and fingerprints at home

Switchboards are among the most frequently touched surfaces in a home, but they are often overlooked during regular cleaning. Over time, dust, fingerprints, oil and grime can make even a clean room look untidy. The good news is that you can clean the outer surface of your switchboards using simple household items. However, because they are connected to electricity, safety should always come first.

Turn Off The Power Before Cleaning

Before cleaning a switchboard, turn off the power supply to the relevant circuit at the circuit breaker. Simply switching off the individual button is not the same as disconnecting the electrical supply.

Start With A Dry Microfibre Cloth

For everyday dust and loose dirt, a dry microfibre cloth is often enough. Gently wipe the switches and outer plate to remove dust without scratching the surface. Pay extra attention to the edges and corners where dirt tends to collect. A soft, dry brush can also help loosen dust from narrow gaps.

Use A Slightly Damp Cloth For Fingerprints

If fingerprints or light grease remain after dry cleaning, use a soft cloth that is only slightly damp. Add a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid to water, dip the cloth into the solution and wring it out thoroughly. The cloth should not be dripping wet. Gently wipe the outer surface and immediately follow with a dry cloth. Keep all moisture away from switches, sockets and openings.

Use A Cotton Bud For Corners

Dust and grime can settle around the narrow edges of switches where a regular cloth cannot reach easily. A dry cotton bud can help clean these small areas. If you need a little moisture for a stubborn mark, use only a very small amount on the outer surface and make sure no liquid can enter the switch or socket.

Baking Soda For Stubborn Marks

For marks that do not come off with gentle wiping, a small amount of baking soda mixed with a few drops of water can be used as a light cleaning paste on suitable plastic surfaces. Apply it carefully to the stain using a soft cloth, rub gently and remove the residue completely. Avoid vigorous scrubbing because abrasive cleaning can damage some glossy plastic finishes.

Avoid Spraying Cleaner Directly On Switchboards

Never spray water, vinegar or any cleaning solution directly onto a switchboard. Liquid can seep into openings and create an electrical safety risk. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive scrubbers and excessive moisture. The safest approach is to apply any suitable cleaner to a cloth rather than directly to the electrical fixture.

Check For Damage Before Cleaning

Cleaning should not be used as a substitute for repairing a damaged electrical fixture. If a switchboard is cracked, loose, unusually warm, shows burn marks, produces a burning smell or makes unusual sounds, do not attempt to clean or repair it yourself.

Turn off the power and contact a qualified electrician.

Clean Switchboards Regularly

A quick wipe with a dry microfibre cloth once a week can prevent dust and fingerprints from building up. Regular light cleaning is easier and safer than waiting until the switchboard develops heavy grime. Once the cleaning is complete, make sure the switchboard and surrounding area are completely dry before restoring power.
