The Victory of Lord Ram Over Ravan

One significant story is about Lord Ram’s battle against Ravan to rescue Mata Sita. According to the legend, during his 14-year exile in the forest, Ravan kidnapped Mata Sita, luring her out of their hut by disguising himself as a sadhu. Lord Ram, with the help of his brother Lakshman and the monkey army led by Hanuman, fought against Ravan's forces. After a fierce battle, Lord Ram emerged victorious on the 10th day, which is celebrated as Dussehra. Every year, this victory is marked by the burning of Ravan's effigy.

The Legend of Goddess Durga and Mahishasura

Another popular story associated with Dussehra is that of Maa Durga’s battle with the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura’s tyranny affected both humans and gods, and none could defeat him due to a boon that protected him from being slain by any man or god. In response, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Lord Brahma united to create Maa Durga. She fought Mahishasura for nine nights during Navratri, ultimately defeating him on the 10th day, which became known as Vijaydashami.

Significance of Celebrating Dussehra

Dussehra signifies hope and faith in the victory of good over evil. The festival reinforces the belief that no matter how formidable evil may seem, the forces of good will ultimately prevail. It also marks the conclusion of Navratri and the beginning of Diwali celebrations. Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravan was celebrated with the festival of Diwali.

Sindoor Khela

In some regions, particularly among Bengali communities, married women participate in Sindoor Khela. They apply sindoor on each other and bid farewell to Maa Durga by immersing her idol in water bodies.

Kullu Dussehra in Himachal Pradesh features vibrant fairs and celebrations, with some communities now including the burning of Ravan's effigies.

Mysuru Dasara

In Mysore, Dussehra is celebrated grandly, with the royal family showcasing horses, elephants, and weapons. This event honors Maa Chamundeshwari, who is believed to have defeated Mahishasura.
